Coin Madness is a competition/casual game where two players (beetles) compete for coins that run around in the forest. The first who stores 9 coins in his house is the winner. By utilizing the car-like movement control, different power-ups and bumping-hit attack strategy, a player will try to become the most wealthy beetle in the world.

How to Play:

Player 1: W: go forward, S: go backward, A: turn left, D: turn right

Player 2: UP: go forward, DOWN: go backward, LEFT: turn left, RIGHT: turn right

Bump the other player on head with your butt

Power-ups can change your behavior

Collect coins

Store coins to house when door open

The first to store 9 wins!

Art Style:

The goal is to create a both relaxing and fun context for the players. My main reference is Two Dots. It's a clean and simple design. Instead of using shapes, I chose to hand draw the images so that it feels a bit more organic. In terms of sound, my sfxs are both from Bfxr and freesounds, com. My background sound track is a mixture of music from typatone.com and a few sound sample of forest.

How the game has changed:

This style enriches the game: it makes the perspective (top view) clear, it helps players relate to their characters and enjoy the environment so it's not just a competition. It made more clear the functions of each element (house - safe zone, pills - powerups). The sounds also helps indicate the player movement, and interaction between players and different elements.

Challenges:

Most of the challenges were small but time consuming, such as adjusting size of sprites and colliders, iterating drawings and composing background sound track. The biggest challenge was the visual design of the characters and the background. It took time to figure out a proper color palette, as well as adding shadows, so that the players stand out from the background.
